Television Positioning System (TPS)

An alternative to Global Positioning System based on 3gpp standards via broadcast

XGen Network “XGN®” is pioneering a groundbreaking advancement in location technology with the development of the Television Positioning System (TPS) — a broadcast-based positioning solution leveraging 5G Broadcast and existing TV broadcast infrastructure.

What is TPS?

TPS™ is a terrestrial positioning system built on 5G Broadcast technology and rooted in 3GPP-defined standards like OTDOA (Observed Time Difference of Arrival) and Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) from LTE. XGN is adapting and extending these capabilities to function over broadcast networks, transforming LPTV transmission sites into powerful terrestrial positioning anchors.

Why TPS Matters

TPS is designed to act as a resilient, broadcast-based complement or backup to GPS, with key advantages:

  • Operates independently of satellites

  • Robust against GPS signal loss, spoofing, or satellite failure

  • Ideal for rural, remote, and critical-infrastructure zones

Applications of TPS

  • Public Safety & Emergency Response: Maintain reliable location awareness during GPS outages

  • Critical Infrastructure: Ensure continuity in transportation, telecom, and power grids

  • Defense & Security: Provide national resilience in the event of space-based disruption

  • Rural Coverage: Deliver accurate terrestrial positioning where satellite coverage is weak
